The sun partially blocked by a few metal arms of an electricity transmission tower provided a shot that bodes well with a solar power theme.

November 16 (Renewables Now) – Independent power producer sPower last week said its Pleinmont Solar I plant, the 75-MW first phase of a huge solar project in Virginia, has been commissioned.

Construction of the solar park, located in Spotsylvania, was finalised at the end of September. The plant is part of 300 MW of solar capacity contracted under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT).

This is the first phase of the 485-MW Spotsylvania Solar Energy Center, which is set to be the fifth-biggest solar park in the US. The second phase, the 225-MW Pleinmont Solar II, is already under construction and is expected to be commissioned in the summer of 2021.

Together Pleinmont Solar I and II will generate about 715,000 MWh of power annually and save over 500,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year.
