Gov project to bring 191 MW of solar to Pennsylvania
March 22 (Renewables Now) – Seven solar parks with a combined capacity of 191 MW will be built across Pennsylvania under an initiative announced on Monday by state governor Tom Wolf.
Pennsylvania PULSE (Project to Utilize Light and Solar Energy), part of the governor’s GreenGov initiative, will provide almost 50% of the state government’s electricity and is described as the largest government solar commitment announced in the US so far.
The solar plants will be built, owned and operated by Lightsource bp, the solar power company backed by BP Plc (LON:BP). They will be located in six counties — Columbia, Juniata, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and York.
Pennsylvania PULSE will become operational on January 1, 2023.
The project is expected to generate 361,000 MWh per year, meeting the entire electricity needs of 434 accounts across 16 state agencies, or about 50% the state government’s electricity usage. The state will buy the solar energy under a 15-year fixed-price supply agreement with power supplier Constellation.
